Whole Year Curriculum

Language Smarts D

This workbook from The Critical Thinking Co. is filled with simple exercises, bright colors, and humor that make learning English skills much more enjoyable. The exercises improve skills in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and thinking. Level B (1st grade) starts with upper and lower case letters, introduces parts of speech, and begins touching on general writing skills.

Logic of English Foundations D
(Manuscript or Cursive)

Provides students with a fun, multi-sensory experience learning to read and write that engages their senses, works naturally with their desire to wiggle and play, and lays a strong foundation for reading and writing success.

All About Reading 3

All About Reading is a highly interactive multi-sensory program that needs to be taught by the parent or teacher. The lesson plans are scripted and illustrated, making it simple for the inexperienced parent or teacher to present the lessons with little or no prep time. Even though it is scripted, this curriculum is easy to adapt to each child’s needs by selecting among the suggested hands-on activities, choosing their favorite books for read-aloud time, and adjusting the pace and amount of interaction.

Explode the Code
3 and 4

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Supplemental Curriculum

Handwriting Skills
Simplified C

Each page has a specific focus, concentrating on pencil position, posture, types of strokes, spacing, legibility and speed. Practice is always targeted, even at the highest level, which includes practice of common word beginnings and endings. Instruction is limited but adequate. Books A and B teach and practice printing. Book C transitions to cursive. And books D, E and F work on refining and maintaining cursive handwriting. The style is traditional, a simplified Zaner-Bloser method.

Spelling You See
Level D: Americana

The Spelling You See methodology employs chunking (identifying and color-marking the letter combinations) in a real-life informative passage to identify the spelling rules in words and then copywork (first) and dictation (follow-up) to solidify the word’s visual picture and send it to long-term memory. It works! With SYS, you can totally avoid the learned-by-Friday, forgotten-by-Monday nature of weekly spelling list programs; there are no weekly spelling lists or tests

Soaring with
Spelling 3

Soaring with Spelling and Vocabulary is a daily spelling program that comes in eight grade levels of spelling/vocabulary work. Other than having to do the pre and post test with your student, Soaring with Spelling is set up for your student to learn independently

All About Spelling 3

All About Spelling has scripted lessons that take the guesswork out of teaching. It has a bunch of helpful features great for one-on-one instruction. All About Spelling takes a multisensory approach so that the student can be successful in spelling regardless of his/her particular learning style. The program can be customized for each student, with daily review of concepts the individual needs to cover.

Spelling Workout C

Spelling Workout has all the components you need to lead students from simple sound-letter relationships to more complex spelling patterns. Students learn spelling skills based on phonics through unique, cross-curricular reading passages, practice, and high-interest writing activities. Packed with flexible lessons, motivating activities, including fun riddles and puzzles, this dynamic program leads students to spelling success!

Editor in Chief
Beginning 2

These workbooks were designed to be an introduction to the Editor in Chief series. Students first review the rules of grammar and mechanics by answering multiple-choice questions. They then learn to apply these rules by editing stories in a variety of formats. Units cover capitalization, punctuation, run-ons and fragments, dialogue, friendly letters, grammar, usage, and spelling. The last unit combines different types of errors into single exercises to review all of the skills simultaneously.

Brave Writer
Partnership Writing

Successfully navigate the Partnership Writing phase (no more “blank page, blank stare” syndrome!) with our Year-Long Language Arts Plan and 10 Monthly Writing Projects. Parents are given clear instructions about how much support to give to a child’s writing project.

Winning with
Writing 3

Winning with Writing is a workbook writing program based on a 36-week school year, with lessons divided into five days. The lessons have various activities to practice the concept, with space for writing in the book. This level includes an introduction to sentences, organizing your writing, main topics, details, and more.

Moving Beyond
the Page 7-9

When combined with a reading program, this curriculum supplement provides units of instruction in language arts, writing, science, social studies, handwriting, math, and character education.

Growing with
Grammar 3

The Growing with Grammar series is an intensive grammar program for the elementary grades that includes sentence diagramming, parts of speech, sentence structure and so much more.

Editor in Chief
Beginning 1

Improves students’ grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and attention to detail using a standards-based thinking approach rather than drill and practice. This effective method teaches students to carefully analyze and edit stories. This book includes 16 lessons in grammar and mechanics. Students identify and circle errors in each story and write their correction. The grammatical and mechanical errors in the paragraphs are based on general instructional guidelines for specific grade levels; the content level, however, is ungraded, allowing usage of these materials at many instructional levels. Writing styles and content are varied to sustain interest and to broaden the students’ exposure to different writing formats, such as letters, stories, and dialogue.

Reading Detective
Beginning

These excellent books use excerpts from award-winning authors, original fiction in a variety of genres and an assortment of nonfiction articles covering a broad array of topics and subject areas. Reading skills honed in the series include: comparison/contrast; distinguishing cause and effect; distinguishing fact and opinion; drawing conclusions; finding supporting details; identifying main idea; making inferences; making generalizations; making predictions; reading for details and information; sequencing; using tables, diagrams, and illustrations; recognizing analogies; predicting outcomes.

Great Works
Literature

These sets are essentially teacher’s lesson plans with accompanying reproducible activity sheets. The studies are very cohesive both internally as they work through a literature selection

D'nealian Handwriting 3

The D’Nealian handwriting method seeks to make the transition from manuscript to cursive easier by adding a slant to the manuscript print and more similarity in the letter strokes between manuscript and cursive with less flourishes in general. Lessons typically include a review of letter formation, practice, review, evaluation, and editing. All of the grade level worktexts are consumable and in full color.

Easy Grammar:
Grade 3

With daily pages and simple exercises, this course (subtitled Daily Guided Teaching and Review) provide a gentle introduction to the basics of grammar, capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, and sentence writing. Like Daily Grams these grade levels have Teacher Editions that include student pages with answer keys in the back and Student Workbooks that have only student pages.

Zaner Bloser
Handwriting 3

The Zaner-Bloser Handwriting offers easy step-by-step instruction and self-evaluation for manuscript handwriting review and transition to cursive, provides meaningful practice and application, and engages students with colorful, fun activities.

Word Roots Beginning

Word Roots is based on this premise: to efficiently and effectively learn vocabulary (and aid spelling as well as reading comprehension) learn the different elements – roots, prefixes, suffixes. Word Roots covers both Greek and Latin roots; these being the foundation of much of our English language

Above all else, we love kids. Their individuality, their abilities, their passions. Children are amazing people and we consider ourselves lucky to work with them everyday.
